The Insertion Point of the Iliopsoas is Everything! . In thinking about the positioning of your pelvis during steep ascents, knowing a little bit about muscle anatomy will cue you into maintaining a solid position with regard to your running form. The iliopsoas inserts on the lesser trochanter... so on the inside and just a little back on your femur. Therefore, when it pulls the leg up, it ends up influencing the external rotation of your femur (which is, of course, powered by those big external rotators in the tush). Note: I am NOT saying the iliopsoas is an external rotator; just think of how the machine works overall...things influence each other. We also know this muscle group is built for MEGA-endurance! . If you can prevent your pelvis from dumping forward when running, especially uphill, you will find better engagement of the iliopsoas.
