Dawn "The centre has been here since 2002. We were one of the first IKC (Indigenous Knowledge Centre) to open in the Cape, there was us, one in the Islands (Torres Strait) and one of the NPA (Northern Peninsula Area) ones I think. Back then we had traditional library aisles and how they (libraries) are usually set up. We then had a refurbishment and I sort of went for the idea of, lets see how an open space looks. I'm sort of glad we went for it because I was humming and harring about breaking away from the traditional rows and rows. Because it is the old womens dormitory (from the Mission days), then it was turned into our community hall, the floor boards are all the original wooden floor boards. So I got them to come in and give it a good polish and buff. How it came up, it is just amazing. Anyone can come in and borrow a book, it's free membership. You can borrow books and DVD's as well. I do have a collection of local history which you can browse but they are not for loan. First 5 forever is on Thursday's as well, thats another project that State Libraries roll out. It's a little sing a long for Mums and Bubs. The outreach play group (Cooktown District Community Centre) come here from Cooktown. They all walk the kids up here and we do a big sing song, language song and do some stuff in language. They get a little special carry bag with a little pack that goes in it. The importance of teaching the Mums their voices are the ones that their babies hear (listen out for), some are really embarrassed and face their baby forward to the person that's singing but in reality you have to face your baby to you as it's your voice that they hear all the time. It's also teaching the young parents to put this down (shows mobile phone). You almost have to treat them like little kids, "Come on ladies, put your phones down, leave Facebook for a while and concentrate on this little one." I was excited by the program because we even have the Grandfather's coming in, I an hoping the Men (Dads) can do something at their centre so they don't feel so embarrassed when they come in when there are just all women here.” #postpositive #yarrieyarns @statelibraryqld

A seat at the table, Solange draws inspiration for her critically acclaimed video, ‘don’t touch my hair’ from the British-Ghanaian artist Lynette Yiadom-Boakye’s artwork. The video mirrors Boakye’s vivid portraits of black figures in group scenes and is shot in natural environments within New Orleans.[Swipe Left] #mseditorials #mayowasamuel #solange #lynetteyiadomboakye

: KULIM - Heritage Products Three heritage products in our favourite 'kedai kopi' (coffe shop/ kopitiam)! 😊 This tea cup is a typical set found in most kopitiam. This particular set was made by 'Johore Pipe Co'. The company was established in 1935 and since 1965/1957, it is known as 'Claytan' and by 1975, their tableware was produced under Claytan brand. This means this cup set is at least 43 years old! The soy sauce bottle is fully made from glass. There are no brand or inscription on the bottle. It is interesting to see how the glass threading closed the bottle up pretty well. Also this is a heavy one too! The pepper dispenser which most Malaysian (specifically, my age and older) would recognized, I think. The plastic bottle with rings around and topped with a red cap is a must for your half-boiled egg breakfast! #kulim #localheritage #culturalheritage #intangbileculturalheritage #heritageproducts #kedaikopi #kopitiam
